The Irvine City Council was scheduled to vote Tuesday on whether to approve a new plan for the Great Park.
The parks original designer, Ken Smith, envisioned the park as a centerpiece for the community, similar to Central Park in New York.
However, several setbacks have forced the city to search for new ways to complete the project.
Developer FivePoint Communities has proposed a plan to build a sports park and several other amenities for the opportunity to construct more homes than originally expected near the park, Councilman Jeffrey Lalloway said.
“The devil’s in the details and we want to make sure the details are right,” Lalloway said.
The City Council was expected to vote on the project during a meeting at 5 p.m.
