The jogger called authorities after seeing the car in the bed of San Diego Creek at 9:20 a.m., according to Irvine police Lt. Julia Engen.

The discovery was made near Harvard Avenue and Michelson Drive (map), Engen said. The area, near a water reclamation plant, a wildlife sanctuary and a golf course, is accessible by an access road that is open to the public but not well traveled, she said.

The car appeared partially submerged at the bottom of an embankment at the edge of the creek, video from the scene showed.

It did not appear that a collision had occurred nearby, police on scene said.

The age and gender of the body were not yet known, and it was unclear if the individual was dead before being burned, she said.
