Alert Student Leads to Arrest of Armed Man on Campus, Police Say

A UC Irvine student was being credited Wednesday with helping police identify and arrest an armed man on campus.

It happened Monday just after 3:10 p.m.  The student, who wished to remain anonymous, called campus police to report a man with what she believed was a handgun near the Ayala Science Library, according to a news release from UCI Campus Police.

Police were able to locate and detain the man within minutes of the call, the release said

The man, who was also a student at the university, was arrested on suspicion of possessing of a loaded gun on campus.

He was charged Wednesday with one felony count each of possessing a loaded firearm on a college campus, unlawful possession of a firearm, and possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, according to the release.

The witness “did exactly what we teach our students to do – be aware of the surroundings and report anything that doesn’t look or feel right. Her action potentially saved lives.” the release said.
