Iftekhar Murtaza, 29, planned the deadly attack after his girlfriend, Shayona Dhanak, broke up with him in March 2007, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

Dhanak’s mother was found stabbed and beaten on a neighbor’s front lawn just after the family’s Anaheim Hills home was doused with gasoline and lit on fire on May 21, 2007.

The bodies of Dhanak’s father and sister were found near a bike trail at Mason Regional Park in Irvine the next day, according to the D.A.’s office.

Murtaza was arrested as he attempted to board a flight from Arizona to Bangladesh on May 25, 2007.

The Orange County District Attorney was seeking the death penalty against Murtaza.
