The patrol officer was checking on an occupied vehicle, which was parked in the 3000 block of East La Cadena about 11:30 p.m., according to a news release issued by the Riverside Police Department.

The officer exited his vehicle, as did a man who was in the parked car near the closed gas station.

The man fired “at least three rounds” at the officer, Riverside police Lt. Larry Gonzalez said. “The officer then took a position of cover and returned fire, striking the suspect.”

Riverside firefighters and American Medical Response personnel were called to the scene, where they pronounced the man dead, police said.

He was later identified by the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s office as Adolfo Ramirez, 37, of Riverside.

The two other occupants of the car, a man and a woman, were detained without incident. They were interviewed by Riverside police detectives and released, officials said.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to contact Detective Dave Smith at 951-353-7103 or Detective Greg Rowe at 951-353-7136.
