Man Catches Fire, Dies While Allegedly Trying to Steal Gas in South L.A.

A man who was allegedly trying to steal gas caught fire and died at a South Los Angeles gas station on Tuesday, according to police.

The incident happened at the Union 76 gas station located at 4442 S. Avalon Blvd. at about 6:30 a.m., Los Angeles police Officer Norma Eisenman said.

The man died at the scene after he somehow caught his vehicle and eventually himself on fire while trying to steal fuel from the station, Lt. John Lortz of the LAPD said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
