It was supposed to be a festive occasion, but instead tempers flared and punches were thrown at a holiday toy drive and Christmas party early Monday morning in Westchester, witnesses said.
The event was sponsored by Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity out of Cal State Long Beach.
It took place at the Radisson Hotel located at 6225 West Century Blvd., near Los Angeles International Airport.
More than 1,000 people attended the gathering, including students from several different colleges, organizers told KTLA 5.
There was an admission price to enter the party. Although organizers said anyone who brought a toy received a discount.
But around 12:50 a.m., something went wrong, witnesses said.
“People walked into the party without paying and they gave them a warning, telling them to get out. They didn’t, they started pepper spraying everybody and they shut the whole party down,” Carlos Gordillo said.
“There was like two fights. Two people got knocked out,” Gordillo said.
Witnesses said tables and chairs were also thrown.
Up to 40 officers from the Los Angeles Police Department were dispatched to break up the fights, the LAPD said.
No arrests were made and no one was seriously injured, according to police.
