Deputies responded about 12:30 a.m. to a report of a person down in the 2000 block of Broderick Avenue (map), according to a statement issued by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

When they arrived they found a victim on the ground, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, said Lt. Marquez of the Sheriff’s Department’s Temple Station.

The man was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, where he died of his wounds, Marquez said.

The victim was identified by family members as 18-year-old Malcolm Mency of Duarte.

Mency, the father of a three-week-old infant, was walking home from his job at a Sonic restaurant when he was gunned down, relatives said. He also held a second job and was completing an internship in nursing, his family said.

His sister, Delisa Kline, said Mency was killed by “somebody trying to be tough, but they weren’t that tough considering that they shot my brother in the back.”

“They couldn’t even face him and look at him while they took his life,” she said.

A fund has been established to help pay for Mency’s funeral expenses. Those who wish to donate may do so by visiting the fundraising page on the website giveforward.com.
