The incident occurred shortly before 5 p.m., when the victim and several others were standing in front a residence in the 700 block of East 87th Street, said Lt. Jeff Nolte of the Los Police Department.

Relatives and friends drove the woman to Martin Luther King Jr. Multi-Service Ambulatory Care Center, where she was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound.

No one else was injured in the incident.

The victim was celebrating Christmas with her family at the time of the shooting, Nolte said. “As you can imagine, they’re devastated,” he said.

“Generally, drive-by shootings lead us to believe that it’s gang-related,” he said. “But in this case, our victim is not a gang member.”

A description of the shooter or shooters was not immediately available. Police were searching for a “dark, large vehicle or truck” in connection with incident.

Anyone with information was asked to call the Los Angeles Police Department at 877-LAPD-247.
