Officers responded to the 200 block of West 85th Place (map) after a call at 5:15 p.m. regarding an involuntary psychiatric hold, according to Sgt. Eric Martin of the Los Angeles Police Department’s 77th Division.

When the officers arrived, they found the man holding a butcher knife, Martin said.

When the man refused to release the knife, police used less-than-lethal force, which was ineffective. It was unclear whether bean-bag rounds or a Taser, or both, were used.

The man then ran inside the house and barricaded himself, Martin said.

Police used tear gas about 8:30 p.m. in an attempt to flush out the man. The standoff was ongoing more than an hour and a half later.
