The crash happened in the 17000 block of Roscoe Boulevard (map) around 12:30 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The suspected drunken driver was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed, when he hit some railroad tracks and lost control of his late-model Ford Focus, police said. He then crossed the double yellow line and crashed into a power pole, police added.

The female passenger died at the scene, and the driver was taken to the hospital in serious condition, authorities said. Neither person was immediately identified.

Video from the scene showed several beer cans falling out of the vehicle.

“There are indicators that DUI was involved here or suspected — we will know that as the investigation continues, but there are certainly indicators that DUI is involved,” LAPD Det. Bill Bustos said. “That driver suffered some very significant injuries and is being treated at a local hospital. After that is done, we will continue the investigation and determine more in terms of impairment.”

The fatal crash forced the closure of Roscoe Boulevard between Hayvenhurst Avenue and Balboa Boulevard. The road was reopened by about 7:45 a.m.

December has historically been a deadly and dangerous month because of the holidays, according to LAPD Capt. Maureen Ryan. Nearly 1,700 people were arrested on suspicion of DUI during the holiday crackdown in L.A. County this year, compared to more than 2,000 arrests last year, officials said.
