Ex-Fire Captain Pleads No Contest to Sex Abuse of Girl Relative

A retired Los Angeles County fire captain pleaded no contest Wednesday to child sex abuse charges that alleged he abused a female relative for several years.

Edward John Cervantes, 62, of Whittier, entered his no contest plea at Pomona Superior Court in response to charges that he molested a girl in his family repeatedly while she was in fifth and sixth grade, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

He had been taken into custody on Sept. 19, 2013, and released on $250,000 bail.

Cervantes was charged Sept. 28 with one count each of a lewd act upon a child and continuous sexual abuse, which took placed between 2003 and 2005, according to prosecutors.

His plea on Wednesday was not negotiated beforehand with prosecutors, according to the DA’s office.

Cervantes was scheduled to return for sentencing on Jan. 27. He faces a maximum sentence of 24 years in state prison.
