Dr. Jandial and Player Profiles: Derrick Coleman of the Seattle Seahawks, NFL’s first legally deaf offensive player

Surgeon and Scientist Dr. Rahul Jandial takes an inside look at the Super Bowl player profile of deaf NFL Fullback Derrick Coleman, and how he has defied the odds of being legally deaf while playing professional football.

Seahawks fullback Derrick Coleman and former UCLA Bruin, is going to the Super Bowl.. The 23 year old from Fullerton is the first legally deaf player to be part of an NFL offense. He has battled a hearing impairment since early childhood (age 3), but has overcome it and then some with the help of hearing aids and his ability to read lips. He has beaten more odds, making the Seahawks’ roster as an undrafted second-year player. Coleman is currently featured in Duracell’s Trust Your Power Campaign.
