A 28-year-old man, who was caught on video dragging his bloody puppy on a leash, was sentenced 16 months in state prison Wednesday after pleading no contest to felony animal cruelty charges.
Dossey James was also barred from owning a pet or having any contact with animals for 10 years, according to a news release from the L.A. District Attorney’s Office.
In court, James admitted dragging his four-month-old pit bull down the street after the puppy stopped walking, the release stated.
A witness, who videotaped the incident, said James continued to drag the dog despite evidence he was injured and leaving a blood trail on the sidewalk, police said.
The puppy was taken to the South L.A. Animal Shelter where he underwent surgery for numerous cuts to his legs and stomach area.
