The fire was reported around 11:30 a.m. in a converted garage behind a home in the 170 block of East 50th Street, according to an alert from the Los Angeles Fire Department.

When fire crews entered the residence they found a 2-year-old boy who was overcome by smoke and flames, LAFD Deputy Chief Joseph Castro said.

The boy was taken to a local hospital, but did not survive, Castro said.

Firefighters also discovered the body of a woman inside the residence.

She was later identified as the boy’s mother, according to LAFD spokesman Erik Scott.

Fire officials said there did not appear to be a smoke alarm inside residence.

No further information was released about the victims or the cause of the fire.
