CEO and founder of Exhale Healthcare Sarah O’Leary joined us live to discuss the March 31st enrollment deadline for Covered California.
What to do before open enrollment ends March 31
o Ask for upfront pricing before you go to the doctor’s office if you have to pay out of pocket.
o Shop around your prescriptions even if your insurance plan has a prescription plan. Call up the pharmacies in your area and ask what the costs of your prescription would be with your insurance plan and if you didn’t use one at all. Sometimes those prices can vary significantly as can the prices offered between pharmacies.
o If you have a PPO or EPO, make sure all of the healthcare providers you use in non-emergency situations are in your network. A doctor’s office might say they accept your insurance. That doesn’t mean they are in your network. Going in for a colonoscopy? Make certain every healthcare professional involved is in your network to avoid huge fees.
New Year, New You: Deductible Resets
o Most deductibles reset December 31st, so now is the time to get all of your annual physical exams and tests like mammograms and colonoscopies.
o By getting your annuals done at the beginning of the year, you will be working off of the deductible for a longer period of time if you need more care.
