A man died in a multi-vehicle crash and a woman was detained Sunday after they allegedly burglarized a Target store and led police on a pursuit that ended on a freeway offramp in Claremont, authorities said.
Officers responded about 5:20 p.m. to the retail store at 9050 Central Avenue in Montclair (map) regarding a burglary in progress, according to a news release issued by the Montclair Police Department.
When the officers arrived, a man fled the store through a fire exit with two 32-inch TVs valued at $508. He then ran to a waiting vehicle with a female suspect, the release said.
The vehicle, a green 2004 Honda Accord, fled southbound on Central Avenue and failed to yield when police attempted to initiate a traffic stop, according to authorities. The car then entered the westbound 10 Freeway.
As officers pursued the Accord, it exited the freeway at Indian Hill Boulevard and collided with three other vehicles, police said.
The man, who was seated in the back seat of the pursued car, was ejected in the crash. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
He was described as being in his 30s but was not immediately identified by name.
The female suspect, identified as 28-year-old Gabrielle Wines, was detained and transported to Pomona Valley Hospital for a complaint of pain, according to Montclair Police.
Two of the motorists who were struck by the Accord were also taken to hospitals for complaints of pain.
Wines will be booked at West Valley Detention Center for murder, burglary and evading a peace officer causing injury or death, the news release said.
