Officers initially responded to the area of East 7th Street and Cerritos Avenue regarding a possible assault with a deadly weapon, said Marlene Arrona, spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department.

When the officers arrived, they determined that a robbery had occurred at a business in the 1100 block of East 7th Street (map), Arrona said.

The employee, who was not immediately identified, was transported to a hospital in critical condition after sustaining a gunshot wound, according to police.

The shooter or shooters remained at large, and an investigation was underway, Arrona said.
