A 10-year-old girl returned home to Southern California Saturday and was reunited with her father after asking Pope Francis to intercede on his behalf.
Jersey Vargas traveled to the Vatican with an immigrant-rights group this week and was able to speak with the pontiff for a few moments.
She asked the pope to raise the issue of immigration-reform during his scheduled meeting with President Barack Obama, and to push for the release of her father, Mario.
Jersey’s father, an undocumented immigrant who had been detained for driving without a driver’s license, was already in the process of being released, authorities later said.
He and his daughter were reunited Saturday when she arrived at Los Angeles International Airport.
