The pursuit began just after 4:15 p.m., when the driver was stopped near the Soto Street exit on the westbound 10 Freeway in Boyle Heights on suspicion of speeding, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick Kimball.

The vehicle, a maroon Chevrolet Impala, pulled over shortly after, getting off the freeway at Washington Boulevard in Mid-City.

The driver dropped his keys out of the car window and then backed barefoot toward officers with his hands above his head.

Officers had their weapons drawn as they waited for the driver to emerge and be taken into custody.

The freeway was backed up for about a quarter-mile after the 10-minute pursuit.
