1 Critically Injured, School Locked Down Following Sylmar Shooting

A shooting near a Sylmar elementary left one woman critically injured and put the campus on temporary lockdown Friday morning.

Police received reports of a shooting and someone screaming for help near Woodcock Avenue and Astoria Street (map) Friday morning, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Wendy Reyes said.

A 19-year-old woman was shot and in critical condition, LAPD Officer Issman said.

Dyer Street Elementary, located about a block from the incident (map), was on lockdown following the shooting, according to the Los Angeles Unified School District. The lockdown was lifted about 8:40 a.m., a district official said.

Two people ran east on Astoria Street toward Herrick Avenue (map) following the incident, Richard French with LAPD’s Media Relations Section.

At least six patrol cars were at the scene as of 8:15 a.m., aerial video showed.
