Man Electrocuted by Downed Power Line in Whittier Backyard

Authorities were investigating the death of a Whittier man who was electrocuted Thursday after coming into contact with a downed power line in his backyard.

Deputies from the Pico Rivera station received numerous calls about a loud explosion around 3 a.m. in the 6400 block of Danby Avenue, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

When the deputies arrived, they learned a resident who went into his backyard to look for the source of the blast came in contact with a downed energized power line and was electrocuted, the release stated.

The victim was identified by the coroner’s office as 45-year-old Juan Nieves, the L.A. Times reported.

He was pronounced dead at the location.
