CEO of the Los Angeles LGBT center, Lorri L. Jean joined us live to tell us about a 25 million fundraising campaign to help build affordable housing for LGBT youth and seniors.
The Los Angeles LGBT Center is launching $25M fundraising campaign—the largest campaign in history of LGBT movement—to build a revolutionary campus with affordable housing for LGBT youth and seniors, which includes 100 beds for homeless youth; more than 100 affordable housing units for low-income seniors and young adults; a new senior center; and much more. When finished, the new campus will span more than one city block in Hollywood! A record $19M in pledges have already been received, including $6.5M gift, the largest ever made to an LGBT organization by a living donor. On any given day, 6000 youth trying to survive on L.A.’s streets; a staggering 40% of them are LGBT. 65,000 LGBT seniors over 65 live in L.A. They are four times less likely than heterosexual counterparts to have children/grandchildren take care of them, more likely to be poor, and often encounter discrimination in traditional senior facilities. Starting May 27, the Center is launching an ad campaign on billboards and city buses depicting the Center’s new name, new logo, and five powerful adjectives to describe our organization: COMPASSIONATE, COURAGEOUS, RELENTLESS, INSPIRATIONAL, STRONG.
