Officers on the “foot beat” heard gunshots around 2 a.m. and immediately responded to the 1700 block of North Las Palmas Avenue (map) LAPD Detective Steven Katz said.

“Hollywood foot officers were in the area here of Las Palmas and Hollywood (Boulevard) when they hear what appears to be a couple of sounds like a firecracker … they walk north on Las Palmas to the front of a hotel where they find an individual laying on a sidewalk,” Katz said.

The man appeared to be in his 20s, unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest. He was later pronounced dead at Cedars-Sanai Medical Center, Katz said.

Roadways near the hotel were reopened around 6 a.m., he added.
