Hawthorne police officers responded at 4:45 p.m. to a residence in the 12700 block of Inglewood Ave. (map), across from Hawthorne High School, where they discovered the unidentified victim’s body in a closet, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

Sheriff’s homicide detectives, who are assisting in the investigation, “have learned that after family members became concerned as to the whereabouts of the victim, they went to her residence to check on her well-being,” the department said in a statement.

The relatives “contacted” the woman’s son at the location and checked the apartment to see if she was there, the statement said.

Hawthorne police were called after the woman was found dead inside the home.

The cause of death was unknown and would be determined by coroner’s officials, said Lt. Dave Coleman of the sheriff”s Homicide Bureau.

The victim’s son, whose name was not released, was being detained at the Hawthorne Police Department.

“At this point, he is the only suspect,” Coleman said.

Hawthorne police officers were interviewing neighbors “to see if they heard anything or can provide any information” about the incident, he said.
