The collision occurred about 12:30 p.m. at the First Assembly Church of God, located in the 500 block of North 5th Street (map), according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

The incident began when the driver, identified as Port Hueneme resident Odessa Edward, apparently hit the accelerator instead of the break, police said.

One person died at the scene, according to a separate tweet from Capt. Mike Lindbery, a spokesman for the Fire Department. The deceased victim was later identified as Maria McCroskey.

“We heard her screaming, and we heard the big bang and we just came over here,” said witness Andrea Galindo, who later began a makeshift memorial at the scene. “That’s just something no one should have to see.

“There were kids out,” she added, choking back tears. “I was actually walking with a gentleman who lives here, and he thought it was an accident coming from the street. Little did he know that it was right through his fence. It was horrible.”

At least 3 ambulances responded to the scene, according to the Fire Department. The Oxnard Fire Department was also called to the location.

A man at the scene said his mother, a parishioner, suffered broken legs when she was hit by the car.

A reverend at the church is also a chaplain for the Port Hueneme Police Department, “so it really affected him as well,” said Sgt. Peter Freiberg.

The driver of the car was hospitalized as a safety precaution, and will be cited for reckless driving, according to police.
