A woman died and a man was in critical condition after four gunmen opened fire on them Thursday night in the Willowbrook neighborhood of unincorporated Los Angeles County, authorities said.
Deputies responded about 10:50 p.m. to a call regarding a gunshot victim in the 700 block of East 137th Street (map), according to a statement issued by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. When the deputies arrived, they found the man and woman suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the two victims were sitting in a vehicle parked near Stanford and East 137th streets when two vehicles pulled up alongside them, the Sheriff’s Department said.
“Four suspects exited the vehicles and began shooting at the two victims,” the statement said.
The woman, who was in the driver’s seat, was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck multiple times, according to investigators.
The man exited the vehicle and was shot multiple times, authorities said. He was transported to a hospital and was listed in critical condition Friday morning.
“I don’t know who could’ve done that to these people. … They were good people. They talked to a lot of the neighbors around here,” said Joe Dirks, a nearby resident who heard the gunshots. “I just don’t know what it could’ve been, what the situation is.”
The shooters fled in their vehicles – one described as a white compact, the other dark-colored, possibly green, sheriff’s officials said.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
