A Los Angeles man convicted of brutally beating his dog to the point of unconsciousness was sentenced Wednesday to one year in jail.

Eric James Fowler was also sentenced to three years of formal probation and ordered to pay a $300 restitution fine, according to news release from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

In addition, the 40-year-old was ordered to attend 48 animal cruelty classes and was prohibited from owning an animal for 10 years.

On March 5, sheriff’s deputies saw Fowler kicking and stomping a white object, prosecutors said.

As the deputies got closer, prosecutors said they realized the white object was a dog.

The deputies intervened and ordered Fowler to stop beating the dog, the release stated.

The dog laid motionless for several minutes before regaining consciousness, according to prosecutors.

Fowler was arrested and the dog was taken to a shelter for medical treatment.
