Alcohol was a factor in a Woodland Hills collision Friday morning that left one man dead and another severely injured, authorities said.

An older-model Mercedez-Benz was heading northbound in the 5300 block of Don Pio Drive (map) about 2:15 a.m. when it struck a parked vehicle and a tree, said Sgt. John Willingham of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division.

The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, Willingham said. The driver was transported to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Neither man was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident, said LAPD Sgt. Randy Modrell. Their names were not immediately released.

LAPD detectives responded to the scene, located in a residential neighborhood just south of Ventura Boulevard, and to the hospital.

Los Angeles County coroner’s officials were also called to the crash site.

The cause of the collision remained under investigation.
