A big rig collided into a freeway overpass in Long Beach early Tuesday, temporarily shutting down a transition road on the 710 and 91 freeways ahead of the morning commute.

The tractor trailer, which was carrying metal, hit the overpass connecting the northbound 710 Freeway and the eastbound 91 Freeway (map) at around 3:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol’s incident log.

A SigAlert was issued a short time later, and all lanes on the transition road would be closed until further notice, CHP Officer Polizzi said.

A tweet from the CHP later stated the roadway would be closed until about 9:30 a.m.

The SigAlert was eventually cancelled around 9:45 a.m., a separate tweet from the CHP stated.

Caltrans crews were at the scene in the morning hours assessing the damage to the overpass bridge.

No injuries were reported.
