The driver of a van died Saturday morning after the vehicle slammed into a big rig that was parked across a roadway in the city of Commerce, authorities said.

The incident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. near the intersection of Slauson Avenue and Boxford Street (map), in an industrial area about a mile west of the 5 Freeway, according to Lt. Paul Hardy of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene, the Sheriff’s Department said. It was unclear if the driver of the semitrailer, who was uninjured, was inside the truck at the time of the collision.

The van apparently struck the big rig without braking, Hardy said, adding that there were no skid marks approaching the point of impact.

No other information was immediately available.

An investigation into the crash is underway.
