Police: Man Shot, Wounded by Officers After Opening Fire in Newport Beach
Newport Beach police shot and wounded a 43-year-old man Friday night after he allegedly opened fire at a beachfront home, authorities said.
Scott Jay Abraham, a Newport Beach resident, was taken into custody and transported to Western Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition, according to a news release.
Police received a 911 call about 9:43 p.m. reporting multiple gunshots heard in the 4600 block of Seashore Drive (map), officials said.
Officers responded to the location and, as they were establishing a perimeter, saw Abraham exiting the home onto a beach-facing patio, according to the Newport Beach Police Department.
After the suspect “fired at least one additional round,” two officers returned fire and struck him, the release said.
No officers were injured in the incident, said Jennifer Manzella, a department spokeswoman.
An investigation into Abraham’s actions is underway. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Kyle Cammack at 949-644-3779, or Sgt. Keith Krallman at 949-644-3764.
The Orange County district attorney’s office will investigate the officer-involved shooting, officials said.
