Two men and a woman were killed when the car in which they were traveling veered off the 60 Freeway in the San Gabriel Valley, flipped over and landed on its roof, authorities said.
The crash occurred about 6:44 a.m. near the border of Hacienda Heights and the city of Industry (map), said Officer Steve Branconier of the California Highway Patrol. The CHP had initially said the incident took place in Industry.
A Kia Soul was headed westbound on the freeway when it left the roadway and struck a fence before going airborne, Branconier said.
The car’s three occupants, all of whom were believed to be in their 20s, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The CHP issued a SigAlert, and the on-ramp and off-ramp at Crossroads Parkway were closed for several hours. All lanes on the freeway remained open.
Speed may have been a factor in the collision, according to authorities. An investigation was underway to determine if alcohol or narcotics were involved.
