A man was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run and driving under the influence after allegedly hitting a 15-year-old girl who was crossing a street in Costa Mesa early Monday morning, according to the local police department.
The girl was running on the south side of the crosswalk against a red light on Baker Street and Fairview Road around 1:30 a.m. when she was struck by a 2003 Saturn SUV, according to a Costa Mesa Police Department press release.
Witnesses tended to the victim as a motorist followed the SUV and helped responding officers locate him at 1250 Adams Avenue (map)
Ryota Takamatsu was arrested and booked on $100,000 bail. He was scheduled to be transported to the Orange County jail in Santa Ana.
The girl sustained a minor skull fracture and was listed in serious but stable in the condition critical care unit at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana.
Although a preliminary report from officials indicated the victim was a 16-year-old female skateboarder, police later clarified she was 15 years old and running. Her condition was serious but stable, police said.
