We can see for free the iconic musical “Cabin in the Sky.” This classic has an all star cast that includes Ethel Waters, Lena Horne, and Louis Armstrong. Following the screening there will be a question and answer session with film scholar Les Wills.
This is one of the largest dragon boat competitions in California. It’s happening at the 2014 Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival. In addition to the competitive racing, there are traditional Chinese art demonstrations, Chinese acrobats, as well as music and martial arts performances.
Marine biologists say this is a go time to go whale watching. The rare Bryde’s whale has been spotted in our area along with endangered Blue whales. Harbor Breeze Cruises and Aquarium of the Pacific experts invite the public to three-hour whale watch excursions and then learn more about whale communication at the aquarium’s interactive Whales: Voices in the Sea exhibit.

All cat and kitten adoption fees are 18-dollars-and-77-cents today at spcaLA in honor of the organization’s founding year. In addition to a new family member, adopters will receive a goodie bag as well as a certificate for a free health examination and a free temporary cat carrier.
A day of wisdom and knowledge is promised the the Los Angeles Conscious Life Expo. There are workshops and demonstrations with a variety of healers.
The U.S. Open of Surfing begins this weekend in Huntington Beach for the 20th consecutive year. The event is part of the city’s year-long celebration of 100 Years of Surfing.
This is the last weekend we have an opportunity to have a red, white, and blue good time with the Harlem Globetrotters. The world famous team has partnered with 24 Hour Fitness for a series of summer clinics.
Each 69-dollar clinic for boys and girls is a two hour session. Skill level does not matter.

St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, in partnership with child passenger safety non-profit SafetyBeltSafe U.S.A., is offering parents the chance to ensure their children are riding safely this summer at a free safety seat checkup. Safety seat inspections will be provided by certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians and other trained staff from 10 am to 2 pm in the parking lot of the Medical Center.
