Free whooping cough vaccinations provided by the Los Angeles Unified School District were administered to qualifying children beginning on Monday.

Pertussis, or whopping cough, is an epidemic in California and is a highly contagious bacterial disease.

All students entering the seventh grade need to show proof of a Tdap booster shot before starting school on Aug. 12, the district stated in a news release.

The law requires students be “excluded” from classes if they do not provide proof of the vaccination, according to the release.

The following LAUSD clinics will be providing booster shots to children who receive Medi-Cal, who are of Native American descent or who have no insurance, the district stated.
