A Houston mother was outraged after learning that her 7-year-old daughter had been forced to sit on the floor in her classroom for a month as punishment for drawing a picture on her desk.
"We talked about (that) it's not appropriate to write on school property or anyone's property for that matter and she said 'yes of course,'" the girl’s mother told local TV station KHOU.
The mother did not want to be identified in order to protect her daughter's anonymity.
She told the station that the teacher told her that the girl's punishment would be to clean the desk, miss recess and go to the principal's office. But there was one additional penalty the mother said the teacher never mentioned.
"The teacher said ‘you're not getting a desk back until the second grade,’" the mother said.
Instead, the 7-year-old was forced to sit on the floor with a clipboard.
The girl told her mother she was afraid to tell her what was going on because “she thought what she had done was so bad she didn't deserve to have a desk."
The teacher was reprimanded for her classroom management, the station reported.
The mother has decided to place her daughter in a different school this fall.
