Congresswoman Karen Bass is the keynote speaker at a town hall forum on homophobic laws in African Nations. The congresswoman is a ranking member of the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights and International Organizations. The reception, presentation and question and answer sessions is free and open to the public.

Walk from Twin Harbor Drive through premier habitat for the rare Cactus Wren on a trail leading to the site of a former WWII bunker and learn about the Peninsula’s military history. This is a moderate walk. Free and open to the public.

The Discovery Channel celebrates SHARK WEEK with a free, family-friendly event called FinFest on the shores of Hermosa Beach. The focus of this fin-tastic event is to entertain and educate.
While we’re on the subject of sea life, marine biologists say this is a go time to go whale watching. The rare Bryde’s whale has been spotted in our area along with endangered Blue whales. Harbor Breeze Cruises and Aquarium of the Pacific experts invite the public to three-hour whale watch excursions and then learn more about whale communication at the aquarium’s interactive Whales: Voices in the Sea exhibit.
