A Long Beach homeowner shot and killed a man who allegedly was trying to burglarize his home on Sunday, police said.
Officers initially responded to a burglary in progress in the 2800 block of East Third Street (map) in the early morning hours, according to Sgt. Megan Zabel with the Long Beach Police Department.
“It was 2:45 exactly, and then I heard the house owner scream,” neighbor Dina Milonas said, adding that she heard several gunshots at the home.
When they arrived, officers discovered the alleged burglar had been shot to death by one of the two residents who were inside the house at the time, Zabel said.
The residents were not injured in the incident.
The alleged burglar was identified as 29-year-old Ryan Mitchell Anderson, a resident of Long Beach, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
Once the investigation was complete, the District Attorney’s Office would determine whether any charges would be filed in connection with the incident, she added.
Later in the day, police organized a community meeting to address the concerns of area residents. At the meeting, Long Beach authorities said that although crime overall was down, there has been a recent spike in home burglaries.
Residents expressed concern over safety in the neighborhood.
“I’m paranoid, I’m totally, totally paranoid,” Milonas said.
The fatal shooting occurred less than three weeks after an 80-year-old Long Beach homeowner shot and killed a woman who he claimed was trying to burglarize his home with a male accomplice.
