A man in his 50s found dead near a hiking trail in the Hollywood Hills on Monday morning was believed to have killed himself, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The body was discovered near a remote trail close to 8350 Mulholland Drive (map) after firefighters were called to a report of an injured hiker.

The initial call came in from another hiker who reported seeing an injured hiker at about 8:45 a.m., according to Brian Humphrey of the Fire Department. When rescuers hiked into the location, they found the person dead, Humphrey said.

The body was found in a wooded area between Fryman Canyon and Laurel Canyon parks, according to the address given by Humphrey.

The victim was a white male in his early 50s who had died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, according to Sgt. Dave Cueto with the LAPD’s North Hollywood Station.

Authorities could be seen responding to the scene, aerial video from Sky5 showed.

What appeared to be the man’s body — wearing running shoes and shorts — lay on his back on a slope among trees and vegetation, video showed.
