The shooting occurred in the 4500 block of Colorado Boulevard (map) in a mostly industrial area between Glendale and Griffith Park.

The woman and her white car were struck by a shotgun around 6:06 a.m., Los Angeles Police Department Liliano Preciado said.

The victim was transported to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center and remained in critical condition as of noon, hospital spokeswoman Rosa Saca said.

Police were searching for a dark-colored SUV that pulled up next to the victim's sedan, authorities said. The car was struck multiple times, police said.

The SUV pulled off the freeway at the same time as the victim in an adjacent lane before the shooting, an LAPD supervisor on the case said.

The gunman's vehicle fled toward San Fernando Road.

Police don't believe the shooting was motivated by road rage, but the possibility has not been ruled out.

The Colorado Boulevard off-ramp from the northbound 5 Freeway and local streets were temporarily closed due to an investigation.
