A man's body was found shot and slumped over the steering wheel of a running vehicle that had shattered windows in Pacoima Thursday morning, officials said.
Police responded around 5:20 a.m. to Glenoaks Boulevard and Vaughn Street (map), Los Angeles Police Department Officer Sally Madera said.
A white Dodge pickup truck was found still running and in the middle of the intersection with a man inside, she said.
The man appeared to have been shot at least once, although multiple shots had been fired, LAPD Captain Steve Carmona said.
He was driving to work when the shooting occurred, family members at the scene told KTLA.
Residents in the area reported hearing three to five gunshots around 5 a.m.
"It happens a lot around here ... I hear gunshots, but nothing like this. This was pretty strong," Andy Alvaraz said.
Surrounding streets were closed for one block in each direction while police investigated. The 118 Freeway is located about two blocks from the scene; traffic in the area was expected to be impacted.
Although authorities initially indicated the shooting was not related to a similar incident in Atwater Village Wednesday morning, it was later stated that they could not confirm or deny any relationship between the two incidents.
