The crash occurred about 5 p.m. near the intersection of Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Osborne Street (map), said Capt. Dominic Choi of the Los Angeles Police Department. It was preceded by two minor collisions on Laurel Canyon, one at Branford Street, the other at Montague Street, he said.

Officers had requested backup after the chase of a suspected stolen SUV began, according to Officer Sara Faden of the LAPD's Media Relations Division. It was unclear where the pursuit started.

Hank Marchetti, who witnessed the end of the incident, said two occupants of the SUV were detained by police after attempting to flee on foot.

After colliding with three vehicles, the male driver "jumped out and took off running," he said, and a woman also exited the SUV and ran in a different direction.

After the man ran around a nearby building, "the police officers came [and] cut in front of him with their police car," the witness said. The man "flew over their hood" before he and the woman were detained, Marchetti said.

Lanes were closed on the side of Osborne where the multi-vehicle crash occurred, and the area was taped off as an investigation got underway.
