A DWP worker was in critical condition after suffering an electrical shock that prompted a power outage in the Encino area late Thursday morning, authorities said.

The adult male Los Angeles Department of Water and Power worker was transported to a local hospital after firefighters were called to the 17000 block of Rancho Street (map) about 11:30 a.m., according to Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The power system crew member was working on overhead power lines when the workers made contact with electrical wires carrying 4,800 volts of electricity, DWP said in a brief statement.

The incident occurred in an area of single-family, million-dollar homes.

About 460 customers were affected by a power outage that was expected to last two to three hours, a DWP spokesman said. The outage was affecting the area around the 18000 block of Ventura Boulevard, he said.
