An elderly woman was found dead during a shooting investigation and her daughter was detained Thursday at a home in the Orange County community of Rossmoor, family members and neighbors said.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department was investigating the death of an adult woman in a shooting investigation in the 11200 block of Wallingsford Road (map), Lt. Jeff Hallock said.
The victim was an "elderly" woman who did not appear to have committed suicide, said Capt. Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Authority, which was responding.
The elderly woman was in her 90s and had a contentious relationship with her daughter who was detained Thursday, according to family members and neighbors.
The woman was dead when paramedics arrived after the 4:20 p.m. call to the scene, Hallock said.
Neighbors and Twitter users expressed disbelief that another shooting had occurred in Rossmoor. An adult brother and sister were shot at a home in the community July 31, allegedly by the step-grandfather.
"This is an extremely safe neighborhood, it was voted one of the best areas in the whole country to live," neighbor Alan Keisner said. "These domestic disputes can happen anywhere I guess, so it's really sad it happened."
A woman was detained in connection to the shooting, the Sheriff's Department tweeted around 7 p.m.
The daughter, who was in her 70s, was frantic and yelling when authorities arrived, neighbor June Schaar said.
"She was very combative and they were trying get her to calm down and get her into the back seat," Schaar said.
Sheriff's deputies would not confirm the identities of the elderly woman or the woman detained, or their relationship.
