A Celebration of Ragtime

The Mayme Clayton Library and Museum begins a two month celebration of ragtime with a screening of the film “Scott Joplin.”

Directed by Jeremy Kagan, this 1977 bio-pic stars Billy Dee Williams and features Clifton Davies, Art Carney and music legend Eubie Blake.

The film tells the story of Joplin also known as the “King of Ragtime.” Joplin composed many of the genre’s greatest hits including the “Maple Leaf Rag” and “The Entertainer” and helped bring ragtime to a wider audience.

The film won an award from the Writers Guild of America in 1979 and contains many of the hit songs Joplin wrote.

The afternoon will also feature a discussion with film historian Les Wills and an introduction by Lloyd Clayton.

See more than 150 precious artifacts on loan from the Naples National Archaeological Museum in Italy, which offer a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle and tragic end of this ancient Roman society forgotten for centuries until its rediscovery over 250 years ago.

From garden frescoes and marble statues to gladiator armor, coins and currency to religious altars and shrines — all set in their original surroundings — experience daily life in this once vibrant Roman city. Then, as the floors shake and the walls rumble, relive the Mount Vesuvius volcano’s catastrophic eruption through an immersive CGI experience, culminating in the reveal of full body casts of twisted human forms, asphyxiated by extreme heat and noxious gases and forever frozen in time.
