Driver Detained After Slow-Speed Pursuit in El Monte

Police pursued a slow-speed driver who was believed to have an outstanding warrant in El Monte Monday night.

The pursuit began around 7:15 p.m. near Ranchito Street and Cypress Avenue (map), El Monte Police Department Sgt. Eric Sanchez said.

Officers initially attempted to pull over the vehicle for a code violation, but later discovered the license plate was connected to an outstanding warrant, he said.

The vehicle drove over a spike strip, damaging multiple tires and causing them to fall off, Sky5 aerial video showed.

The driver stopped and was detained near Peck Road and Elliot Avenue (map) around 8:10 p.m.

About 20 to 30 bicyclists followed the nearly hourlong chase and hundreds of people gathered to watch the driver be detained.
