A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of fatally stabbing his girlfriend in Palmdale, authorities said Sunday.

Jose Martinez, of Palmdale, was booked for murder and was being held in lieu of $1 million bail, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Station.

His girlfriend, whose name has not been released, was stabbed to death Saturday at her home in the 38000 block of 3rd Street East (map), the Sheriff’s Department said.

Deputies responded about 1:30 p.m. to a report of a “person not breathing” at the location. They found the victim suffering from stab wounds to her upper torso, detectives said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Martinez was not at the home when sheriff’s personnel arrived. Witnesses told investigators that the couple had been “fighting” earlier in the day.

Martinez was initially described as a person of interest in the case. Within hours of the stabbing, deputies found him sitting at a bus stop and took him into custody, officials said.

He is scheduled to appear in Antelope Valley Municipal Court on Tuesday morning.
