The race for L.A. County Sheriff was between two law enforcement veterans.

Paul Tanaka was a department insider during a troubling time that saw deputies charged with abusing prisoners in the county jail.

He was facing off against Jim McDonnell, who has a long history at the LAPD and more recently With the Long Beach Police Department.
