In anticipation of the implementation of AB60 - which will require the Department of Motor Vehicles to give drivers licenses to Californians who cannot prove they are in the country legally - a Mid City church began Sunday offering free courses to help locals pass their driving tests.

Holy Spirit Catholic Church, located at 1425 South Dunsmuir Ave. (map), planned to offer three driver’s license implementation courses beginning Sunday.

“It was really a huge success,” Father Aloysius Ezeonyeka said.

About 250 people indicated their interest the first day courses were announced, he added.

The classes come less than two months before the state is expected to offer driver’s licenses to people who cannot prove they are in the country legally, but meet all other qualifications for licensure.
